Today, I experienced something that has never before happened to me.
An attractive young lady, who is not my wife or daughter, actually complimented me on my choice of clothing.
That generally only happens to me when my wife, also an attractive young lady, gets me to shave and wear a tie. Then she tells me how nice I look. I'm sure my wife is 100% sincere but suspect that there is also an element of subliminal positive reinforcement involved. Anyhow, today's story went thus:
I was called to go up to the Tyngsboro facility of the company that I work for. I drove over there, and pulled into a parking spot at the rear of the building. Outside the door, there was the predictable gathering of 7 or 8 people smoking, as no smoking is allowed in the building. The guys in my group refer to them as "The Smoking Girls", a moniker that includes any who happen to be male. So I grabbed my tools, manuals and box of parts, locked up my van and headed in. Like the Red Sea, the Smoking Girls parted as I approached the door. I buzzed the lock open with my badge and pulled the door open. As I entered, one of the group turned, dropped the stump of her cigarette into the bucket and followed me through the door. Now this is not someone I really know, other than to say "Good Morning" out of politeness as I pass by. I was not even sure I knew her name. She has streaked hair and lots of earrings. So I turn right and head down the hall, she is headed the same way, a few steps behind. As I approach a big set of double doors I do as my dad taught me, open the door, hold it and stand aside to let her go through. She starts through the door, thanks me, and says "Hey, that's a really nice belt!" This is new territory for me. Before I can process this enough to reply, she adds "Where did you get it?" I tell her the truth, that I have had this belt for so long that I could not recall where I got if my life depended on it, and that there is a pretty fair chance that: A) It is older than she is and B) My mommy bought it for me. Neither is likely an exaggeration. She responds that she guessed that it was old, as the tooled patterning in the leather was really nice and everything like that you find nowadays seems much more cheaply made. With that we each went in different directions.
Such an odd exchange. While it is a nice belt, I guess, nobody has ever taken note of it. Perhaps that is because it is somewhat hard to see when I am wearing it. Heh. I would be more likely to describe it as an "old belt" than anything else. It is sort of the only one I have. Luckily for my ego, she did not say something like: "Yeah, I cold tell it was old by the way the holes for the buckle are stretched out from straining to hold in that fat gut all these years!" or something similar.
So that's me. Fashion plate, Babe magnet.
