Silly Guy

This is Silly Guy. He was made by my friend Diane, also known as Mrs.Paperboy, for those regular Fetafilter readers. This is Diane and me blowing bubbles at a wedding a couple of summers ago. Too bad life wasn't always blowing bubbles...but that's not the point of this post.

Diane made Silly Guy for Teddy as a baby shower gift. She made a beautiful matching quilt to go with it. Teddy is completely attached to Silly Guy. It is truly his security blanket even though Silly Guy isn't a blanket, but the quilt is (I think you get what I mean). He does sleep with the blanket and Silly Guy every night. Silly guy, however, is with Teds all throughout the day. He leaves him slung over his shoulder like a dish towel. When we eat dinner at night, Silly Guy gets stuffed into a pewter pitcher on top of the buffet to keep him from getting all gross from Ted's hands while he's eating. Don't ask me why Teds picked the pitcher to stuff Silly Guy into, but he does.

For probably a year now, Teds has been bugging me to "sew" him a Silly Girl. I really don't know what Teds was thinking because he has never in his seven and 11/12ths years of his life seen me sew. I have a total of four sewing machines in my house, and I think the last time I used one was in the late 80's to make Alan a rifle case. Two of the sewing cabinets have lego creations on top of them and my treadle machine doesn't have a belt. I don't/ can't make dresses (they always come out the wrong size), and I certainly can't/ won't attempt anything that has a seam that curves . I guess that only leaves hemming curtains. So.....

I asked Diane if she would make me a Silly Girl for Teds for Christmas. She kindly accepted my request and in less than a week delivered me a Silly Girl that far exceeded my expectations. All I had told her was that Teds wanted a "pink" Silly Girl. She didn't know that Teds also had asked for blue eyes. Much to my amazement Diane had put blue eyes on Silly Girl.

I just wanted everyone to see Teddy's reaction when he opened Silly Girl this morning. I especially wanted Diane to see how special her talent is, and how much it meant to Teds and me. Thanks Diane.

Overheard at the dinner table...
One of the high points of the day around here is usually dinner time, in part because of the conversation that goes on. Tonight as we sat eating, the subject of pets came up and Raymond chimed in that he wanted someday to have a giant tortoise roaming around his house. Like one of those huge ones you can ride on. Somewhere in the discussion Tessa chimes in with "... All I want is a squirrel...", and Sue asks "for a pet?" Tess say no, she wants a dead one that she can mount with her squirrel mounting kit. Chaz says that we could just pop one in the back yard with a wrist rocket. Lacking a wrist rocket, I said that we could just shoot one in the yard with the pellet gun, it being too congested here for a true firearm. Then Tess adds, very matter-of-factly;
"Yeah, but if we just drown it, there won't be any bullet hole to sew up!"

Pretty much ruined the rest of the meal for Mrs. A. Good thing she was almost done eating at that point.

Snapshot...
We are sitting in the library room by the fire. Ray and 'Drew are playing a zombie killing flash game together on Andrew's laptop, saying stuff like "Ray, back up and throw the grenades over there..." Amanda watches on while knitting Andrew a hat. Mom and Chaz are web surfing on their respective IPODs. Tess is toasting herself by the wood stove and Ted is upstairs simultaneously watching a Charlie Brown special and playing a computer game, after doing 500 jumping jacks just because someone told him he could not do that many. I'm typing this. Just another day in the life.

Speaking of gifts...
OK, so a vacuum cleaner or exercise gadget are out as gifts for my wife. But I'll bet she might like one of THESE!

Made it!!
The giant tree limbs that snapped off of the tree in our neighbors yard and fell 30 or so feet managed to miss our house. Good thing, as it would have crushed the roof in. So after a night of listening to snapping trees and explosions at the power company substation a few miles away, we emerged unscathed except for a bunch of debris in the yard, a crushed fence section and having no power since midnight on Thursday night. Between the wood stove and our generator, we remained warm and pretty comfortable. Lucky for me that the generator wiring I put in a few years ago actually worked, this was the first time we tried it. I would have never lived it down. Our power just came back on a few hours ago. Lots of people around here will not get theirs back for several more days. Quite a mess.

I can't complain, though it was a very busy weekend for me. Much running around and not quite enough rest. We did get a bunch of free firewood out of the deal for next winter. Every cloud, and all of that...

Gifts
Our friend, Paperboy, sent this Youtube link to Mr.A. Usually I get the same forwarded emails as Mr. A does from Paperboy. This one didn't arrive in my inbox. I'm trying to figure out if Paperboy is trying to "warn" my husband of making this mistake, or if Paperboy has already experienced this mistake for himself. Does Paperboy know something I don't know , such as, what Mr. A is giving me for Christmas? In any case, I think it's appropriate that all male Fetafilter readers watch this video before going shopping, last minute, on Christmas Eve.
