Happy Birthday to Ted...
This past Saturday we had occasion to celebrate Ted's 9th birthday. In typical Teddy style, it ended up being a Big Deal. He wanted to go to some museum but did not specify any one in particular. So we packed the whole gang into the crimson van after removing all of the beaver trapping supplies and firewood, naturally) and headed off to Worcester to the Higgin's Armory Museum. This is a pretty cool place and is very Teddy-like. Being a nine year old boy, he loves anything involving weapons and swinging swords. These knight guys were pretty creepy, I for one would really hate to be chased down by this guy, and would be a bit suspicious of any knight dressed like this or this. Really, what's with the skirt?

Anyhow, as it was a Saturday, the museum had some cool demonstrations of how knights would be equipped and do battle. Some of these guys must have been really tough in a fight. Imagine how mean you would be if you had to show up for a major battle wearing this! Andrew dubbed this guy the "princess Leia" knight. After some explanation and more demos, it came time for audience participation. Volunteers were invited from the audience to be trained as pikemen. Teds of course could not pass that chance up. As the demo progressed, Ted paid attention and tried hard to make all the right moves. He and his comrades-at-arms took this all very seriously. The crowd was enthralled!

Once the demos were done, we took in the rest of the sights. Always prepared, Andrew came equipped with emergency rations to stave off starvation, which he kindly shared with Amanda.*
We closed out the afternoon in the kids activity section of the museum. Andrew and Amanda matched wits, before Andrew challenged Ray to a game of giant chess while Tessa comforted the bishop. Ted stopped in at Ye Olde Armorers Workshop to pick up some supplies and transform into a knight. There was also the obligatory trying on of funny helmets by the kids. Chaz can't seem to resist this one for some reason. And don't forget the traditional taunting-Ray-with-a-monkey, to top the trip off.

Once we got home, we got pizza and did the whole cake, ice cream and gift routine. When it was all said and done, Teds declared it "The best birthday ever!" Quite an endorsement.

Engineer pick-up line of the week...
Spoken in our family room a short while ago:

Andrew: "Hey Amanda, wanna see my equations?"

Amanda: "Sure!"

Andrew heads off towards the music room, where his laptop is waiting, Amanda follows close behind.

Smooth operator, that Droob.
