Flushed with pride.*

A few weeks back, Mrs A and I were wandering the local Home Despot store. For some reason, we happened to pass through the plumbing fixture section. While there I noticed the impressive display of toilets ranging in price from about $60 to a few pushing a thousand bucks. Nothing unusual about that really, but what caught my eye was that each one of those toilets came labeled by the manufacturer with a catchy name. Names like: "Cadet", "Townsend", "Doral", "Rialto" as well as the most impressive sounding "ARAGON V". Wow. Now I suppose this is all just good marketing but these are after all, toilets. Imagine, it is somebodies job to think up stuff like this. Harnessing the power of the internet, I did a bit of web research and turned up even more. For you deep-thinking pensive types there is the "Retrospect", and for the ambitious competitive types among us, there is the "Champion". For the disturbed (or perhaps more civic minded) there is the "Town Square". Now I can only speak for myself here, but "Town Square" does not strike me as having a strong association with a toilet. If it does for you, perhaps you should consider therapy. One is called the "FloWise". Now that's a good name for a toilet.A few were named after people, the "Kathryn" and the "Gabrielle", which I assume are the names of some of the marketing folks daughters, wives or mothers. Such a moving tribute. Of all of these, the one that cracked me up the most was one called the "Hatbox" toilet. Given what one does with a toilet (and a hat), hatbox doesn't strike me as a particularly good name. That one reminded me of an expression that my father would use (very rarely) when he was REALLY disgusted with someone. Almost made me laugh out loud. * Late edit - The title of this post "Flushed with Pride" is shamelessly stolen from a book by the same name.
