Flashback, episode #1
At an early age, maybe 4 or 5, Cassie had already developed an impressive arsenal of tactics designed to delay bedtime for as long as possible. Almost every night, I would walk her up to bed, sit while she said her prayers, tuck her in and give her goodnight kiss. She would then engage me in some sort of conversation about things that had happened that day, or ask some deep question in hopes of keeping me there for a while. While such tactics are standard kid stuff, Cassie, being a bit ahead of her time was often innovative beyond the standard "Where does the wind come from" and "Why is the sky blue" stuff. She used those of course, but would often want to discuss how spiders eat, why don't they get stuck in their own webs (that one stumped the spider guy at the MOS), and why bread dough would rise (Mrs A. was baking a lot of bread at the time). Pretty good stuff really, and given my natural leaning towards "thorough" explanations, often pretty effective. But of all of the delay questions, the best of the best was the night she was all set for bed, tucked in and kissed goodnight. I turned to leave the room and she said
"Dad?"
"What?"
"How do people in factories make trombones?"
Clever. Very clever. I did not have time to go into the full story. So like a good parent, I dodged the question and told her to go to sleep. For many years after I would suggest that given her long running interest in the manufacture of trombones, that Cassie ought to write me a 10 page report on the topic "How people in factories make trombones." She never did write that for me, so I'm not entirely sure that she has actually ever met all the qualifications for high school graduation.

Well, it has been quite a few years since then. I don't expect I'll ever get that paper, so recently the research wing of the Fetafilter staph located some pertinent info on the subject. So in honor of my lovely oldest daughter we would like to present:

"How People in factories make trombones."

Enjoy and be edified.
