Airshow palooza...
In an effort to counteract all of the "pastelness" that Sar was so concerned about in her response to the Drewy-Llama post, and to avoid getting crushed by a giant falling beer can, I thought I would add a post with some machismo. And what could be more macho than some awesome warplanes? This past saturday we attended the annual airshow held at the Nashua airport. Tons of cool stuff to see and hear. Nothing "pastel-ish" about this! Or how about this shot of Tess & Ray in front of one of my all time favorite airplanes, the A-10 Thunderbolt. I really, really want one of those. Charlie arranged this picture to prove to Ray that the cannon on the front of that plane is as big as Rays head. And there is nothing at all pastel about a P-51 Mustang, or this Corsair (the Japanese nicknamed these "whistling death", how's that for not pastelish, huh?) Drew just put on his sunglasses and stood near the planes, so that people would think that they belonged to him. He did finally fast talk somebody into letting him take their plane up, but it turned out to be a plane that was a bit tricky to fly, and Drew had a bit of trouble staying in control. Luckily, he managed to land OK. Mrs A. seemed very interested in this plane, I suspect it is a genetic thing. This is a shot of a flyover by an F4 Phantom jet fighter, gear and tailhook down . The noise this thing made was awesome! I was unable to get a better shot of it, because I was trapped 30 minutes into what turned out to be an hour long line at the one-and-only hotdog and burger vendor there. Ted got to pilot a NH State Police chopper. Later on in the day, I had the last laugh, because for 20 bucks and a hotdog, I managed to talk one of the A-10 pilots into dive-bombing the food concessions. Heh, take that. This is one of the few good pictures I managed, it is a B-24 Liberator, just as it was landing. This was cool to see as this is the only B24 still flying in the entire world. Which is pretty amazing when you consider that there were well over 19,000 of these built during WW2. It must have been an awesome sight to see and hear several hunderd of these planes flying in formation overhead. One fascinating thing I saw was 2 very old guys, both wearing VFW hats and jackets. They where sitting side by side in their wheelchairs, one had his arm atop the other guys arm, and they had their hands clasped together. They both sat there facing this B24, staring at it, not talking. One of the guys looked like he was about to cry. I'll bet they have some stories to tell.
