Last Christmas, Marg and Spmarg gave me one of those little desk calenders that you pull off a page for each day. On this one, called "Sound Bites", each days page has a funny or profoundly dumb quote from some politician or political figure. On the page for Tuesday (chosen, no doubt because Tuesday was Flag Day) there was a quote from our recent president Clinton. It struck me so funny that I did a tiny bit of web research, which only made it funnier.
Apparently while on a state visit to Romania, then President Clinton was given a gift of a Romanian flag. The flag had a hole in the middle of it, where the emblem of the despised communist regime had been ripped out. Apparently such flags where common in Romania at the time, as a symbol of the reovolution against the communists. When presented with this profoundly symbolic gift from the Romanian government, President Clinton said:
"Thanks for the Poncho."
