Sue-A Palooza...
|
Well, as most of you know, yesterday was Mrs A's birthday. As it happened, she was not quite up to a full scale ruckus and palooza like the kids generally have, but we did manage to pull together a small more sedate celebration to mark the occasion with the help of Justin & Kathy M. and family, Cass & Markie, and the seemingly ever-present Amanda. This brought the headcount more than high enough to qualify as an "official" palooza, under the well known international rules for such things.
We all managed to eat a large number of pizzas and other stuff and as is often the case, a crowd gathered in the family room to view some goofy video on youtube featuring a creepy gnome and other nonsense, until the wacky-zaniness grew out-of-control. Also out of control was the younger crowd, who had morphed into a collection of assorted superheros of some sort or another.
later on, although Mrs. A was slightly insistent about not being given any gifts, Kathy& Co. blatantly ignored that directive, and presented this lovely begonia-type-thing to a SHOCKED Mrs. A. Look at the surprise on her face! Not wanting to be outdone, Markie, on behalf of himself and Cass, presented her with this awesome Verizon FIOS PEN!!! She was so overwhelmed, that she held this pose for over twenty minutes, just taking in the awesomeness of the pen. Continuing the writing-implement theme, Andrew and Amanda gave her a cool color-changing pencil. And finally, she unwrapped her birthdaymobile. WOO-HOO, Happy Birthday!
All in all we had a great time. The only cloud over the day was poor Chaz, who joined in with the festivities for a while, but ended up suffering miserably with the continuing aftermath of his 4X wisdom tooth removal of a few days earlier. He is generally the life of the party at these things, but was not feeling well at all.

Micro-post...
|
Chaz had his four wisdom teeth removed today. According to the doctor, two were pretty much just extractions, that other two were "a bit more work" as he put it. While we were waiting during the procedure, we could hear a sound coming from the operating room that sounded amazingly similar to the electric winch I used to have mounted to the front of my old Ford Bronco. I wonder if that is what they use to pull teeth these days. Everything went well, Chaz is in recovery at home. I expect he will be feeling pretty crummy for a few days.
In other news, I snapped a picture that pretty much tells you most of what you need to know about Teddy.

Springtime...
|
Today was one of those trick days, when you look out the window and it is bright and sunny and beautiful out. Then you step outside, and not only is it cold but the wind is blowing hard enough to push you back and make it feel very cold. But there can't be too much of this left, so it is tolerable. The official first day of spring was just a couple of days ago, and the garden ducks have re-emerged from the snow. Yesterday while we were sitting at the dinner table Mrs A. noted that there were buds appearing on the tree across the street. It reminded me of a spring inspired poem from my early youth:
Spring has sprung, the grass has rizz, I wonder where the flowers is? They peeps their heads above the ground, to get peed upon by dirty hounds.
Happy Spring!!

Drat, missed it....
|
Well, at least we did not miss PI day. But somehow we managed to let a very important holiday pass without note. Yes, on the last Friday in February, it was National Beaver Day in Canada! I can't believe that Mrs. A did not point it out. We really ought to have one of those in the US as well.Make sure to mark your calender for next year! And to help with next years celebration, the staph here at Fetafilter recommends that you click here and follow the instructions. Don't wait until the last minute holiday rush!

HAPPY PI DAY!!!!!
|
This being March 14Th (or 3.14), the staph here at Fetafilter would like to wish all of you a happy Pi day. Take a moment to pay tribute to that wonderfully irrational number that makes so much of our modern existence possible! Make sure that you partake in the traditional Pi day celebration by having a piece of pie at 3:14 this afternoon, unless of course you are a "fundamentalist", in which case you would have done so already at 3:14 AM.
Remember also that tomorrow is the "Ides of March". Beware.

I just finished...
|
...fixing the dishwasher. I am beginning to hate major appliances. I don't think they like me all that much, either. In the process of doing the repair, it peed on my shoe.

And speaking of ducks and clowns...
|
Last Saturday, Sue and I attended a banquet held to benefit Ducks Unlimited, a real conservation organization, that was held at a nice hotel function hall out in leominster. We attended with a couple of my hunting buddies along with their wives. There was great food, lots of raffle type stuff, and a fund raising auction that featured folks bidding (often many) hundreds of dollars for things like tiny carved wooden chickadees and paintings of dogs. People really dig deep into their wallets to help out the ducks. All in all, a fun time, with the slight exception of three guys who happened to get seated at our table with us. They were all related, cousins or something, and as the night wore on and the number of empty wine glasses and beer bottles grew around them, the more obnoxious they became. And the more foul (not "fowl" heh...) their language got. Even when they were asked to tone it down, there being women at the table, it only grew worse. In truth, it was largely 2 of them, the third who was apparently the designated driver and thus considerably less intoxicated, even suggested they knock it off. He seemed a bit embarrassed when they really didn't. Anyhow, in spite of their annoying-ness, they did provide a bit of entertainment when the auction started. As they were quite drunk by that time, they started bidding on and winning all sorts of stuff. One of them managed to buy an office chair (black fake leather with the DU logo embroidered in the back) for 400 bucks(!). He then rolled his new chair over to our table, sat in it, and declared that it "sort of sucked." What an idiot. It got better when they auctioned off one of the last items on the list. It was a book printed in the 1950's, a coffee table type thing about duck decoys, paired with an antique style DU sign of some sort, made to look old but clearly described as a modern reproduction. Once the bidding started, chair-guy started popping his hand up, upping the bid until he finally won them, for a bit over 100 dollars. He went up and collected his book and sign, returned to the table, took a look at the sign and exclaimed: "Hey! this isn't even OLD!, It's a FAKE!!" His buddies all looked in amazement, just as shocked as he was. We all looked at each other and laughed. The real topper came when the evening ended (and they had dropped easily over $1000.00 on stuff), they piled all of their winnings on the office chair, and staggered out, rolling it out towards the front door. A few minutes later, our group walked out, and there in the cold on the front walk of the hotel is one of the three, waiting for the other two to bring the car so that they could load their loot. On the office chair is one of the duck decoys that he had paid maybe 100 dollars for. He had dropped it off the chair rolling it over the little hump at the door threshold. It's head was broken off and shattered. Heh.
The next morning, I woke up as sick as a proverbial dog. Sue took a look at me and said, "You don't look so well, but I'll bet you feel better than those guys at the banquet feel this morning."
