New guidance system
|
Christmas came a bit early for me this year, it seems. Last Saturday evening, I was sitting in the family room quietly surfing the web when I was assulted by the entire rest of the family, singing "We wish you a merry Christmas." Mrs A. was holding out a wrapped package which she handed to me after the singing was done. She explained that she had gotten this for me for Christmas, but figured that I would get much use out of it before Christmas day and so decided to give it to me now. So after all of requisite box-shaking and pretending to try to imagine what was inside, I opened the package. In the box was a brand new, way cool Garmin GPS60 GPS receiver! She went on to explain that with the opening day of deer season on the following Monday, I would now have this unit to help negotiate our hunting area, and still return home. That is a bit curious because she is always telling me to "get lost!" Anyhow, I've always wanted one of these gadgets, and this is a nice one. One particularly neat thing about this was the way that my wife explained how she came to choose this model out of the many that are offered. After considering the upper limit of the budget, she looked at the available models. She figured which features that would be most useful for me,( something maybe 1 out of 1122.84 wives could even guess) and setteled on this one because it was compact, ruggedly built, and most of all exibited the longest battery life for any similarly equipped unit. I know very few people who even read those sorts of specs, and I don't know anyone whose wife would even think to do so. Mrs A. thinks like an engineer, it is one of her many endearing qualities. Come to think of it, with her skills, it is not hard to imagine that she may have subtly altered this unit, such that instead of leading me home, it will direct me to say, fall into an abandoned quarry hole. Hmmm, I think I will hang onto my trusty old 9 dollar compass afterall...

Tis almost the season...
|
OK, now that Thanksgiving is past, we are bound to start seeing the Christmas decorations going up. Chaz and I have already spotted several wire-frame light up reindeer. Just can't wait until the season opens on them. Anyhow, if you like elaborate Christmas light displays, you ought to love this one.

Cough, cough....
|
Some days, my job is really fun. Just a couple of hours ago, my boss got to use an extinguisher to put out a fire that I started. Way fun, flames shooting out of an 8" pipe, hitting the celing and everything! Smoked Sven and all of his coworkers right out of the room.
I has been a while since I had this much fun at work. Really lifted my mood. It dosen't get much better than that.

Another A. family moment...
|
So Chaz, Mrs A. and I were getting ready to run out to the store to pick up some stuff. As we are about to go, Mrs. A notices that someone has tracked mud from their shoes into the back room. Big problem. "Who has mud in their shoes?!?!, I just vacuumed this today!" She zips about the house checking first my shoes, then Chaz, and finding none of the dreaded mud, then noticed that Ray was still wearing his boots from earlier in the day. She corners Ray in the back room and as he cowered in the corner, said to him (firmly!) "Ray, stand there and stamp the rest of the mud out of your shoes!" Ray, who is timid to begin with, stands there for a second, doing nothing. Mrs.A repeats "Stamp the mud out of your shoes. Stamp your feet, like this!" and proceeds to vigorously stomp her feet up and down on the tile floor to demonstrate the method. As she does so, a pile of mud shakes out of the treads on HER shoes. In seconds, Chaz, Ray and Tessa all burst out in a chorus of "OOOOOOOH! Whose shoes have mud in them, hmmmmm?" and start laughing. ZING!
For the rest of the day, Ray kept walking up to her and saying "HA! your shoes had the mud in them....AH HA HA HA...!"

He tried to warn us.
|
Yes he did. Drewy gave us a long post a while back explaning why he resisted all requests for links from his blog site. In a nutshell, he said that once he linked one persons site, he would be inundated with requests from everyone to add their link.
So you can't say he didn't warn us. Look at what has happened here at Fetafilter. Now that we have added SJ, Sven, and Nayrb, I have gotten calls from MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, DNA, RNA, PDQ and even MYOB all asking for links on Fetafilter. When I ask why they feel worthy, they all say "WELL, Durdge gets a link, why not us, HUH, I mean Beethoven gets the sheep!?
Sheeh!

All in the Name of Science
|
A bomb squad blew up a metal pipe that had a battery, wires, rope and an electrical switch, only to realize it was an eighth-grade science project. "An electromagnetic fishing pole," Allegheny County Bomb Squad Sgt. Robert Clark said, holding the contraption with the battery blown off. A clerk found the device _ made from three feet of half-inch metal pipe _ near the greeting cards display at a drugstore Thursday. Police Chief Roger Beadling said he got within six feet and decided not to take any chances. "It definitely appeared to be some kind of explosive device," he said. The bomb squad used a robot to examine the device, then destroyed it. A 10th-grader at Frazier High School said the science project is something eighth-graders do every year. "You have to make it so it can pick up metal paper clips, but you can't use magnets," Tiffany Burton said. "I hated that project." Jim Shahan, owner of a pizza shop a few doors away, said had he seen the device, he might have saved everyone a few anxious hours. "I just helped make one for my daughter," he said.
